Plaid Cymru Urges Hywel Dda Health Board to Reassess Withybush Cuts
The decision by the Hywel Dda Health Board to downgrade emergency general surgery services at Withybush Hospital has sparked significant concern among local residents and political representatives. This morning, the Health Board voted to discontinue the full emergency general surgery service, which includes surgical operations, and instead focus on enhancing the Same Day Emergency Care system.
Kerry Ferguson, the Plaid Cymru candidate for the upcoming Senedd elections in Pembrokeshire, expressed her disappointment with the decision. She emphasized that the removal of emergency general services at Withybush Hospital poses a serious risk to the health and wellbeing of local residents.
Impact on Local Healthcare Access
Ferguson highlighted that patients in west Pembrokeshire will now face a minimum of an hour’s travel to access emergency operations or significant treatments. This change, she argues, could have dire consequences for those requiring immediate medical attention.
“The removal of emergency general services is a huge blow to our community,” Ferguson stated. “While the Board has committed to maintaining and strengthening Same Day Emergency Care, residents are understandably worried about the implications of this decision.”
She called on the Health Board to urgently reconsider their stance, urging them to take into account the potential risks and impacts that the implementation of this new service model will have on Pembrokeshire residents.
Community Concerns and Future Steps
Local residents have voiced their anxieties regarding the future of healthcare services at Withybush Hospital. Many fear that the changes will lead to delays in receiving critical care, thereby endangering lives. The community’s reaction underscores a growing sentiment that accessible healthcare is being compromised.
As the situation develops, Ferguson and other local advocates are expected to continue pressing the Health Board for a review of their decision. They argue that thorough consultations with the community are essential to ensure that the health service meets the needs of residents in Pembrokeshire.
The Health Board’s decision reflects broader challenges facing healthcare systems in various regions, where resource allocation and service accessibility remain contentious issues. As Pembrokeshire grapples with these changes, the outcome will likely influence future healthcare policies in the area.
