Princess Alexandra Hospital Leaders Outline Future Healthcare Plans
Residents of East Herts and West Essex will have the opportunity to learn about upcoming developments in local healthcare during a special meeting hosted by the Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (PAHT) on February 26, 2024. Chief Executive Thom Lafferty will discuss the trust’s long-term vision and the strategies in place to adapt healthcare services for a growing and evolving population.
The PAHT, established in April 1995, operates several facilities, including The Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, the Herts and Essex Hospital in Bishop’s Stortford, and St Margaret’s Hospital in Epping. With an annual income of approximately £430 million, the trust provides comprehensive services, including 414 general and acute beds, a 24/7 emergency department, an intensive care unit, a maternity unit, and a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The hospitals serve an immediate population of around 350,000 residents, extending to nearly 500,000 when including areas like Hoddesdon, Cheshunt, and Broxbourne.
During the meeting, Lafferty will also address the Government’s New Hospital Programme. Health Secretary Wes Streeting has indicated that construction for a replacement facility at Hamstel Road in Harlow is slated to begin in 2032. This development is part of a broader initiative to modernize healthcare infrastructure.
Local Healthcare Initiatives and Community Engagement
Chief Financial and Infrastructure Officer Tom Burton will provide insights into plans for St Margaret’s Hospital, emphasizing how care will be increasingly delivered closer to home through a Neighbourhood Development approach. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility and create a more responsive healthcare environment for residents.
Additionally, Divisional Director Dr. Monica Bose will present information about the new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at St Margaret’s Hospital, which is set to open this spring. She will highlight the services available at the CDC, underscoring how the facility will improve access to diagnostic tests and treatment options for patients.
The meeting will take place at Epping Hall, St John’s Road, Epping, from 18:00 to 20:30. It will feature a general question and answer session, allowing attendees to engage directly with PAHT leadership. Lafferty expressed enthusiasm about the event, stating, “We’re building a vision for the future of healthcare that places patients and communities at its heart. This event is a chance for local people to hear directly from us about our plans, ask questions, and help shape what care looks like in the years ahead.”
The PAHT encourages community members with an interest in local health services to participate. Those wishing to attend are advised to register through the official Eventbrite link provided.
