Receptionist Attacked by Patient at Stepping Hill Hospital
A receptionist at Stepping Hill Hospital was left with significant injuries and emotional distress after being attacked by a patient in the accident and emergency (A&E) department. The incident occurred at approximately 05:45 on December 27, 2025, as the staff member was concluding her night shift. The patient reportedly climbed over the reception desk and assaulted her, resulting in bruising to her face, head, and body.
Witnesses reported that it took three security guards to subdue the patient and protect the receptionist. A source from the hospital expressed concern, stating, “She shouldn’t have been put in that position. A&E is a very high-risk environment, but in 2026, NHS staff should be able to go to work knowing they will be safe.”
The receptionist has since taken time off work and is described as being extremely shaken by the attack.
Official Response and Investigation
A spokesperson for the Stockport NHS Foundation Trust confirmed the attack, stating, “We can confirm there was an attack by a member of the public on an emergency department receptionist on December 27, 2025. This was reported to our own security department and to police, who took action according to procedures.”
The spokesperson further noted that the matter is currently under investigation and that the affected staff member is receiving necessary support. They emphasized that such incidents on hospital grounds are rare, but each occurrence is treated with the utmost seriousness. “Whenever an incident of violence is reported, this is taken extremely seriously, and we take all actions necessary to ensure the safety of our staff, patients, and visitors,” they added.
In light of this incident, questions have been raised regarding safety measures for hospital staff. Greater Manchester Police have been approached for further comment on the ongoing investigation and any potential legal actions resulting from the incident.
As healthcare environments continue to face challenges, this incident highlights the need for heightened safety protocols in emergency departments, where staff and patients alike are often in vulnerable situations. The response from hospital administration and law enforcement will be closely monitored as the investigation unfolds.
