Bride Marries at Slater’s Hotel Before Sudden Closure
A recent wedding at Slater’s Country Hotel & Inn in Baldwins Gate has taken on a bittersweet note as the venue announced its permanent closure just two days later. Beverley Irving celebrated her wedding at the popular location on March 2, 2024, only to learn that the hotel would cease operations on March 4, 2024.
The sudden shutdown has left many couples scrambling to find alternative venues for their upcoming nuptials. Beverley expressed her shock and sadness over the news, describing her wedding experience as “lovely.” She praised the staff, particularly Gemma, stating, “You were attentive and thoughtful and you made it perfect.” The attentive service from the bar staff, domestic team, and DJ contributed to a memorable day for the couple.
Slater’s Country Hotel & Inn has served as a cherished wedding venue for decades, hosting numerous couples throughout its history. In light of the recent closure, former brides and grooms have shared their own fond memories. Ruth Gibb recalled her wedding reception there in 2003, noting it was “the happiest day and a perfect venue.” Her sentiments were echoed by Liz Gilbert, who reflected on her own experience in 2022, stating, “Julie and the team were absolutely amazing on our wedding day there.”
Julie Ann Challinor, who married at Slater’s in 2018, lamented the loss of a venue that held personal significance, as she grew up in the village when it was still a chicken farm. The emotional responses from past clients highlight the deep connection many have formed with the site over the years.
Despite the closure, Slaters Club Limited, the entity managing the hotel, remains listed as “active” on Companies House. Their latest financial accounts, published in 2024, indicated that the company employed a total of 60 people. The sudden decision to close the venue has not only affected future couples but also the staff who dedicated their efforts to making each event special.
As news of the closure spreads, it has become clear that many will cherish the memories made at Slater’s Country Hotel & Inn while grappling with the reality of finding new locations for their celebrations. The impact of this closure resonates beyond just the wedding industry, highlighting the shifting landscape of local businesses and the community’s reliance on cherished venues.
