Buckie Community High School’s New Headteacher Sets Ambitious Goals
A new era is unfolding at Buckie Community High School (BCHS) as Jemma Playfair embarks on her first term as headteacher. Having transitioned from Milne’s High School in Fochabers, Playfair is optimistic about BCHS’s potential and has outlined a bold vision for the future.
Reflecting on her initial experiences, Playfair remarked, “When you look at the journey that Buckie has had in the last five years, it’s going from strength to strength. It’s a school with so much potential.” She attributes this promise not only to the dedicated staff but also to the students, stating they are eager to excel. She believes that when both teachers and students are committed to their best efforts, “the sky’s the limit.”
The transition from Milne’s to BCHS has been significant, with BCHS boasting a student population of over 800 compared to Milne’s approximately 480. Playfair noted, “BCHS is a much bigger school than Milne’s High School, but with it being bigger, you get more opportunities.” She recognizes that the larger enrollment offers a wealth of possibilities for student leadership and engagement.
Playfair is keenly aware of the importance of community within a larger school environment. “Sometimes when you go to a school that’s quite big, you lose that sense of community,” she explained. “I don’t think you lose that here with the size of the school.” The school retains a strong community feel, enhanced by the unique characteristics of its feeder primary schools.
As part of her initial initiatives, Playfair has engaged in extensive consultations with staff, students, and parents on various matters. “I want to base any changes on evidence,” she stated, emphasizing that her focus is on what will genuinely benefit the students. “It actually has to benefit the young people; otherwise, there’s no point in doing it.”
Looking forward to the end of the academic year, Playfair aims to refresh the school’s core values of compassion, ambition, respect, and effort. A notable initiative gaining traction among parents is the promotion of school uniforms, which Playfair views as a way to foster pride in the school community. “It’s really about having that pride, having that pride in the building, pride in being part of the school,” she noted.
In December 2023, BCHS is set to pilot a scheme that reintroduces registration classes at the beginning of the school day. This initiative aims to provide students with consistent contact with teaching staff, fostering a supportive environment where students can approach teachers more easily for assistance.
Playfair is also committed to revitalizing school excursions and trips, which have yet to return to pre-COVID levels. She highlighted the importance of the school’s long-standing connection with Tanzania, describing her visit to the country as a “life-changing experience.” This connection exemplifies her commitment to broadening students’ horizons through global engagement.
Despite some negative perceptions surrounding the school’s recent media coverage, Playfair remains focused on the positive developments within BCHS. “I want people to speak about the school and feel proud of it,” she asserted. “There’s a lot of people that are really invested.”
As part of her strategy, Playfair plans to enhance communication with the community and improve the school’s transition policy for pupils moving from primary to secondary education. She emphasized the need to ensure that students are well-prepared for this significant change.
The outlook for BCHS under Playfair’s leadership is overwhelmingly optimistic. She expressed confidence in the school’s potential and the community’s desire for its success. “This is a fantastic school, there is so much potential,” she said. “The staff morale in here is fantastic.”
As BCHS continues to evolve, Playfair is committed to highlighting the positive achievements of both students and staff. By fostering a culture of pride and engagement, she aims to ensure that Buckie Community High School remains a place where students can thrive and excel.
