Bury St Edmunds School Wins National Award for Pupil Wellbeing
A primary school in Bury St Edmunds, England, has been honoured with a national award for its dedication to pupil wellbeing. Howard Community Academy, part of Anglian Learning, received the National Nurturing Schools Award from Nurture UK. Inspectors commended the academy for integrating social and emotional support throughout its curriculum, awarding it an ‘enhancing’ rating in most categories, a distinction given to institutions that exceed standard expectations.
Headteacher Alison Weir expressed pride in the achievement, stating, “It is a privilege to receive an award that celebrates a happy and caring learning environment.” She highlighted that the award aligns with the school’s core value of nurturing, which is embedded in its daily practices. “The recognition belongs to our brilliant staff who work tirelessly with our children to make sure they feel safe, valued, and inspired to learn,” Weir added.
Innovative Initiatives for Wellbeing
The award acknowledges several initiatives introduced at Howard Community Academy in recent years. These include the establishment of nurture practitioners, the creation of a wellbeing hub known as The Hive, and investments in specialist emotional support and training for staff.
Feedback from pupils and parents during the assessment process was overwhelmingly positive. One pupil noted, “I know if I have a problem, I can come to anyone.” Another added, “We get to know how kind our teachers are; they help us learn.” Such comments reflect the strong relationships cultivated between staff and students, which are central to the school’s approach.
Rachael Johnston, director of Primary Education at Anglian Learning, described the award as a “well-deserved milestone” for the academy. She remarked, “Achieving the National Nurturing Schools Award is a well-deserved milestone for Howard Community Academy, especially as nurture sits at the very heart of its vision.” Johnston emphasised the collective effort involved, stating that the recognition celebrates the hard work of the entire school community, including a dedicated leadership team and committed staff members who view pupils as individuals.
The recognition of Howard Community Academy serves as a testament to the importance of fostering a supportive educational environment. By prioritising emotional wellbeing alongside academic achievement, the school stands as a model for others aiming to enhance the educational experience for children.
