Care Worker Transforms Life, Loses 10 Stone with Slimming World
Laura Roche, a care worker from Southport, has dramatically transformed her life by losing over 10 stone 8 pounds through participation in Slimming World. Her journey began in 2023 after a moment of reflection led her to realize the need for change when she struggled to put on her boots.
For more than 20 years, Roche battled with her weight, which had resulted in a plethora of health issues, including debilitating migraines and polycystic ovarian syndrome. On a day when she was tasked with escorting a client to a Slimming World group, Roche observed the success of others during the session. Inspired by a fellow participant named Viv, who celebrated reaching her weight loss target in her seventies, Roche was compelled to make a change in her own life.
“I sat there and I thought, ‘I don’t want to be the weight that I am at her age,’” Roche recalled. This pivotal moment led her to join Slimming World, where she found a supportive community that encouraged her to embrace healthier eating habits.
After joining, Roche quickly found her footing within the group. She reflected on the importance of companionship, saying, “That was the lifeline I needed, so I could be with friends.” She described the Slimming World group as a “magic place” filled with support, where members share tips, recipes, and inspirational stories.
Roche’s weight loss journey involved significant lifestyle changes. Shifting from restrictive eating habits, she embraced a balanced diet that included meals prepared with her mother, who also joined Slimming World and has lost six stone. Roche’s commitment to a healthier lifestyle sparked positive changes in her family, with her son also adopting healthier eating habits.
As part of her transformation, Roche incorporated physical activity into her routine, starting with short walks around the block. She built her stamina, eventually walking for an hour each morning and evening with her dog. The physical health benefits were significant, allowing her to shed pounds and improve her overall well-being.
Roche’s journey culminated in achieving her target weight of 10 stone 5 pounds and earning the prestigious Club 50 Award from Slimming World. She expressed her gratitude for the support of her consultant, Dee Wright, and her fellow group members, stating, “We’re all on the same journey… nobody joins Slimming World to win a competition.”
Her accomplishments have not gone unnoticed; Roche was recently voted Slimming World Woman of the Year 2025 in her group, which further highlights her commitment and the impact of her journey. Wright praised Roche as an inspiration, emphasizing her positivity and dedication to supporting others in their weight loss journeys.
Now, Roche enjoys an active lifestyle and takes pride in her appearance. She has shifted from a mindset of restriction to one of abundance, discovering new recipes and healthier alternatives that she enjoys. “I love baked oats with fresh berries and overnight Weetabix,” she shared, highlighting how her culinary experiences have transformed her attitude toward food.
Today, Roche looks forward to participating in her Slimming World group sessions, which she attends weekly at St Simon and St Jude’s Church in Southport. With seven sessions available, new members are always welcome to join the supportive environment. Roche’s story serves as a testament to the power of community and personal determination in achieving health goals.
