Castlehill Care Home Shows Improvement After Latest Inspection
Castlehill Care Home in Inverness has demonstrated notable progress following its most recent unannounced inspection conducted by the Care Inspectorate. The evaluation, which took place from December 15 to 17, 2025, revealed that while the facility is advancing in several crucial areas, its overall performance continues to be rated as “adequate,” the third tier on a six-point scale.
The home, operated by Simply Inverness Ltd under the Morar Living group, currently accommodates residents on its middle and upper floors, as the ground floor is undergoing refurbishment. The inspection team engaged with 39 residents and eight relatives, observed daily activities, and reviewed care records, staff interactions, and various documents. They also interviewed 10 staff members and the management team.
Positive Developments Noted by Inspectors
Inspectors reported a “happier atmosphere” within the care home, attributing this positive change to increased staff morale. Many relatives and residents expressed confidence in the home’s new leadership team. Improvements in care planning were evident, with updated documentation and quicker responses to changes in residents’ health and wellbeing.
Staff responsiveness to residents’ continence needs has seen enhancement, and skin care support has improved significantly, with residents appearing “smart and well-dressed.” Mealtimes have become more dignified, with staff providing one-on-one assistance when necessary. During the inspection, a variety of in-house activities were available, including music sessions, baking, and seasonal crafts. Activity staff were noted for being engaging and well-attuned to the interests of residents.
The leadership team received commendations for their growing confidence and professionalism. Inspectors observed a clearer structure in place to support staff on shifts, along with improved management oversight. Enhanced quality assurance systems were implemented, leading to better responses to staff practice concerns.
Areas for Improvement Remain
Despite these advancements, inspectors highlighted the need for continued work in handling complaints. Although a policy exists and training has been provided to staff, inspectors found that complaint logs were often brief, lacking consistent detail about actions taken and outcomes. Consequently, the requirement to improve complaint handling has been extended until March 2026.
The inspection also assessed infection prevention and control procedures, an area that had previously required attention. This requirement was met, with the report noting a clean environment and effective cleaning routines, as well as staff adherence to good hygiene practices. All legal documentation regarding capacity and decision-making was found to be up to date and appropriately stored, with managers acting swiftly on any necessary updates.
Overall, the care home received an “adequate” evaluation across all assessed areas, including supporting residents’ wellbeing, leadership, and care planning. While this signifies progress from earlier inspections, the Care Inspectorate emphasized that “continued focus” is necessary to further elevate standards. Inspectors expressed encouragement regarding the home’s direction and its ability to address previously raised concerns.
Next steps will concentrate on ensuring that improvements are sustained, particularly in maintaining better records and effectively addressing concerns raised by residents and their families. The full inspection report is available for public access. Castlehill Care Home management has been invited to provide comments regarding the inspection findings.
