Coleg Cambria Celebrated for Impactful Tanzania Education Project
Coleg Cambria has received notable recognition for its transformative project in Tanzania, earning a finalist position in the prestigious British Council Award for Excellence in International Work category at the AoC (Association of Colleges) Beacon Awards 2025/26. This marks the college’s second consecutive year on the shortlist, reflecting its commitment to impactful international initiatives.
The project took place in Arusha, Tanzania, where students from the college participated in a community education programme aimed at supporting local children. Over the course of nine intensive days, these Health and Social Care students delivered comprehensive education to approximately 4,000 learners, often engaging with classes of around 60 children. The programme included four sessions daily, covering crucial topics such as infection control, safety, and sexual health, all essential for improving public health in the region.
Vicky Edwards, Vice Principal of Technical Studies, expressed pride in the college’s accomplishments. “Being shortlisted again is a tremendous honour. Our students demonstrated incredible dedication, empathy, and professionalism throughout their time in Tanzania,” she stated. “Their impact on the community – and the personal growth they achieved – exemplifies the transformational power of international education.”
The project offered a profound learning experience for the participating students, many of whom came from underrepresented backgrounds, including young carers and those with additional needs. By applying their Level 3 Health and Social Care knowledge in a challenging setting, they not only strengthened their resilience but also broadened their perspectives. For many, it was the first opportunity to travel abroad and experience stark social inequalities firsthand.
In addition to their educational contributions, the students raised more than double their original fundraising target for the Future Sense Foundation. This fundraising effort enabled the construction of seven new school toilets for female pupils at a supported school in Arusha, addressing issues of gender inequality in education.
Assistant Principal for Technical Studies at Deeside, Lisa Radcliffe, highlighted the challenges faced by the students. “The students embraced every challenge, stepping far beyond their comfort zones and proving just how capable, compassionate, and committed they are. Their hard work made a genuine difference, and we are immensely proud of everything they accomplished,” she remarked.
This recognition follows last year’s success, when Coleg Cambria was also shortlisted for its impactful work in Vietnam, where students supported women at a social support centre and engaged in activities at primary schools. The AoC Beacon Awards are now in their 31st year, celebrating outstanding innovation and best practices across further education in the UK. Winners of the 2025/26 awards will be announced in early 2026.
Coleg Cambria’s commitment to international education not only enhances the learning experiences of its students but also contributes positively to communities in need, creating lasting impacts across the globe.
