E-Bike Program Revitalizes Life for 67-Year-Old Frances King
Frances King, a 67-year-old resident of Oxfordshire, has experienced a remarkable transformation in her life thanks to the Cherwell District Council’s Move Together programme. This initiative aims to promote increased activity among residents, particularly those with long-term health conditions. After being referred to the programme, Ms. King began using an e-bike in September 2024, an experience she describes as life-changing.
Initially skeptical about e-bikes, Ms. King believed they undermined the effort of traditional cycling. However, she quickly discovered the benefits of using the e-bike, stating, “I didn’t want to give it back. It’s fantastic.” She found that riding on the lowest setting allowed her to engage her muscles effectively, leading to a sense of accomplishment and joy. “I can feel my body has done something, and it’s just sheer joy,” she added.
New Horizons Through Cycling
The e-bike has opened up new avenues for exploration for Ms. King. She undertook a remarkable 33-mile ride through the picturesque landscapes of Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, and Warwickshire. “I even cycled up steep hills, including Edgehill. I would never have done those on a regular bike,” she said, highlighting the newfound capabilities she has gained.
Beyond the physical benefits, Ms. King noted improvements in her posture and overall strength. “It’s not just about impact; it’s about strengthening the muscles around the bones,” she explained. The e-bike has also transformed her daily life, allowing her to replace car trips with cycling. “I did my Christmas shopping on it, picked up bread from the local shop, and just kept going,” she remarked.
Ms. King emphasized the freedom e-biking provides, saying, “It’s the freedom to explore, to stop and take in the view, to talk to a farmer – it’s something you don’t get in a car.” Inspired by her experience, she is now considering purchasing her own e-bike and encourages others to explore this option. “Definitely try it. Start on a quiet road and see how it feels,” she advised.
Supporting Community Health Initiatives
The Move Together programme aims to enhance mobility for eligible residents of Oxfordshire through a combination of telephone support and fitness sessions. Designed to assist adults facing long-term health issues, mental health challenges, or those at risk of falls or chronic pain, the initiative is making a considerable impact.
Rob Pattenden, the portfolio holder for healthy and safe communities, praised the programme, stating, “Move Together is a fantastic scheme that has a proven track record of supporting residents to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle.” He highlighted that nearly 70 percent of participants who were completely inactive at the start of their journey maintained increased physical activity for at least nine months after joining.
Frances King’s experience serves as a powerful testament to the positive effects of wellbeing and active travel initiatives. Her journey illustrates not only the improvements in health but also the rediscovery of joy, independence, and connection with her community. As more individuals engage with programmes like Move Together, the potential for enhanced quality of life becomes increasingly evident.
