Flood Threats Diminish in Podgorica as Water Levels Decrease
Authorities in Montenegro announced a significant reduction in flood threats in and around Podgorica. On October 16, 2023, the Commander of the Protection and Rescue Service of the Capital, Nikola Bojanović, alongside the Director of the Directorate for Protection and Rescue at the Ministry of Interior, Miodrag Bešović, conducted aerial surveys of the affected regions, including Tološi, Mareza, and Bera.
The situation has markedly improved since previous days, with water levels in Skadar Lake reported to be considerably lower. Bojanović stated, “The water level has dropped by about 20 centimeters, and the current conditions are stable.” He further noted that there is no immediate risk of further flooding in Zeta and Tuzi. With no rain forecasted for the coming days, the outlook is optimistic.
During the assessment, the officials observed that the areas most impacted by flooding, particularly Beri and Tološi, are recovering well. “The water is receding by the hour,” Bojanović added, highlighting the absence of southern winds that could exacerbate the situation.
According to the Ministry of Interior, several interventions have taken place in Podgorica, particularly in Beri, Koman, and Lužnica, where evacuations were necessary. A family of five was evacuated from Tološi the previous day. The report characterized the overall situation as stable and under control.
Officials confirmed that the water level of Skadar Lake is normal and can accommodate additional water being released from Albania. Today’s release is significantly lower, approximately 500 cubic meters per second, with levels in the Danube basin also decreasing.
Residents in Beri expressed relief as they noted a tangible improvement compared to the previous day. During a visit on October 15, Saša Mujović, the Mayor of Podgorica, accompanied Bojanović to the most affected neighborhoods, acknowledging the seriousness of the flooding. He emphasized that all relevant services have been actively supporting citizens in need of assistance.
In response to the ongoing challenges, Bojanović encouraged residents to contact the Protection and Rescue Service at phone number 123 if they require bottled drinking water, which will be delivered directly to their homes. This community-focused approach aims to ensure that all residents have access to essential resources during this recovery phase.
As the situation stabilizes, local authorities remain vigilant, prepared to respond to any changes in conditions. The collective efforts of the emergency services and the resilience of the community are key to overcoming the challenges posed by the recent flooding.
