Former Chief Justice Vesna Medenica Arrested in Criminal Probe

Vesna Medenica, the former president of the Supreme Court of Montenegro, has been arrested on suspicions of involvement in a criminal group led by her son, Miloš Medenica. The arrest follows revelations from intercepted phone conversations that took place just days before her detention in April 2022.

In a conversation dated April 14, 2022, Medenica expressed her feelings of betrayal, stating, “I have become the biggest thief, and I sacrificed my own life to fulfill my duties properly.” This statement was part of a twelve-minute phone call that has now been included in the court records. The content of the conversation was not reviewed during the latest hearing at the High Court in Podgorica, as noted by presiding judge Vesna Kovacevic, who described the discussion as involving “the private issues of the accused.”

The main focus of the intercepted communication revolved around a health issue concerning Miloš Medenica. Just eight days prior to the call, the Libertas portal published a report from Europol, which was shared with Montenegrin authorities, indicating that Miloš Medenica was allegedly involved in cigarette smuggling and drug trafficking. According to messages from the encrypted Skye application, he claimed that his mother was aware of his illegal activities and provided him with protection. Both Vesna and Miloš Medenica have categorically denied all accusations against them.
