Home Guard Group Revives History at The Bell in Aldworth
On Saturday afternoon, patrons at The Bell in Aldworth experienced a remarkable encounter as members of the Redline Home Guard living history group visited the pub. The group, dedicated to preserving the legacy of Britain’s Home Guard, brought a piece of history to life, allowing attendees to engage with a bygone era.
History of the Home Guard
The Home Guard was established in May 1940 as a volunteer force tasked with defending the nation against the threat of German invasion during World War II. Comprised of unpaid soldiers, it included individuals who were ineligible for regular military service but eager to serve their country. The Redline Home Guard specifically represents the 1st Berkshire (Abingdon) and 5th Oxfordshire (Henley) Battalions, which were instrumental in defending the Stop Line Red along the county border.
“Our members come together with all the duty, comradeship, humour, and sense of adventure of the original Volunteers,” stated Cpl A Tierney of the Redline Home Guard. The group meets twice monthly at various locations, often choosing sites of historical significance to replicate the training and duties of the original Home Guard.
Community Engagement and Events
The Redline Home Guard actively hosts open days along the GHQ Stop Line and engages the public through displays at numerous historic pillboxes situated along the River Thames footpath between Abingdon and Pangbourne. Their outreach includes participation in local shows and railway events, where they aim to recreate the experiences of the battalions through authentic uniforms, equipment, and weapons.
“It has been our privilege to have met some surviving members of the Home Guard and hear their many stories of their unique experiences during that time in our history,” Cpl Tierney added. The group continues to foster a sense of community while educating the public about the significant role played by the Home Guard during the war.
For those interested in joining the Redline Home Guard, further information is available on their official website: https://www.the-red-line.co.uk. Their commitment to preserving history not only enriches local culture but also pays tribute to the sacrifices made by those who served in the original Home Guard.
