Lansdowne Primary School Celebrates Move After 137 Years
Lansdowne Primary School in Cardiff has officially bid farewell to its historic location on Norfolk Street after 137 years. The school community celebrated this significant transition with a heartfelt picnic and various activities, marking the end of an era shaped by two world wars and extensive social change.
The event brought together pupils, staff, and families to honour the school’s rich history before its relocation to a new site on the former Fitzalan High School grounds, less than half a mile away. Headteacher Michelle Jons expressed gratitude for the time spent at the Norfolk Street site, stating, “We wanted to say thank you to Norfolk Street. We’re simply turning the page to a new chapter.”
Celebrations Reflect School’s Legacy
The festivities featured a dress-up day that showcased different eras in the school’s history. Classroom activities encouraged students to explore how Lansdowne has evolved over the years. Participants created memory boards that included photos and stories contributed by former and current pupils, staff, and families. A whole-school picnic was held, complete with music spanning the decades, celebrating the school’s vibrant community.
Jons highlighted the pride felt by the school community in their achievements, stating, “Those years will live in us and shape our future.” The school’s spirit, she noted, remains strong as they look to the future with “excitement and courage.”
Addressing Building Deterioration
The move comes as a response to ongoing issues with the current buildings, which have reached an end of life stage. Cardiff Council indicated that Lansdowne Primary’s facilities have suffered from significant deterioration, prompting the school to close four times in the past year for essential repairs.
Problems included leaks in the roof and ceilings, water damage affecting electrical systems, unsafe windows, failing stonework, drainage issues, and significant rainwater damage. The transition aims to provide a safer and more conducive learning environment for students.
The new school is designed to meet modern educational needs, featuring flexible classroom spaces, refurbished halls and dining areas, updated nursery and reception facilities, and state-of-the-art information and communication technology (ICT).
A new school logo has also been introduced to commemorate this pivotal change. The design reflects the “vibrant, multicultural spirit” of the Lansdowne community, as determined through feedback from consultations.
As Lansdowne Primary steps into this new chapter, it carries with it a legacy that has spanned more than a century, while looking forward to a future filled with potential and growth.
