Llangollen Eisteddfod Launches International Flag Appeal for Unity
The Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod has initiated an International Flag Appeal aimed at maintaining a vibrant display of flags from various countries along the town’s historic bridge throughout the year. Traditionally, the bridge across the River Dee showcases flags during the summer months, welcoming performers and visitors to one of Wales’s most renowned cultural celebrations. This year’s Eisteddfod attracted over 4,000 competitors from around the globe, who brought together music, dance, and a spirit of friendship in the scenic Dee Valley.
Established in 1947, the Eisteddfod has become a symbol of peace and reconciliation, promoting unity through artistic expression. Created in the aftermath of conflict, it continues to foster connections among nations, cultures, and communities, reflecting a spirit of camaraderie that remains crucial today. Currently, the flags are only displayed during July and August due to financial constraints related to their upkeep and replacement.
Organizers of the Eisteddfod express a desire to see the bridge adorned with international flags year-round, sending a permanent message of welcome. David Hennigan, a Board Director of the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “In a time when flags are such a hot topic of conversation across the UK, Llangollen’s story is different. In a world where flags can sometimes divide, our international flags are a symbol of unity. They represent peace, friendship and the spirit of Wales as a country of sanctuary. If people want to celebrate flags, why not fly flags for unity?”
The Eisteddfod is calling upon individuals across Wales and beyond to contribute to its International Flag Appeal. Donations will be utilized to purchase and maintain flags, ensuring that the town’s message of inclusivity and hospitality remains visible throughout the year. Supporters can make contributions through the Eisteddfod’s official website.
This initiative not only aims to enhance the visual appeal of Llangollen but also reinforces its commitment to promoting unity and friendship among diverse cultures. The Eisteddfod continues to celebrate its legacy as a gathering place for artistic expression and cultural exchange, embodying values that resonate across borders.
