Local Craft Shop Owner Secures New Space in Kent Shopping Centre
A well-known craft store in Kent has secured a new permanent location after nearly a decade in its previous spot. Melissa Dawkins, the owner of Made in Ashford, has announced that her shop will take over the unit formerly occupied by The Body Shop in the Park Mall shopping centre. This move comes after Ashford Borough Council revealed plans to demolish the existing shopping complex and replace it with an interim car park, with future residential developments planned.
Made in Ashford originally opened in October 2015 as a temporary pop-up shop, intended for just three months. However, its popularity led to a permanent presence at Park Mall until its closure in October 2023. Following this, Dawkins briefly operated a second pop-up shop at County Square while searching for a new, long-term location.
In an interview with KentOnline, Dawkins expressed her excitement about the new opportunity. “Getting the keys to the new shop is very exciting – we can finally put all of our plans in place,” she stated. The new unit has been vacant for two years and offers additional amenities, including an office and staff room. “These feel like absolute luxuries,” she added.
### A Focus on Local Craftsmanship
Made in Ashford serves as a platform for local artisans, showcasing handmade goods and unique designs. The store features a range of products, including quirky stickers, keyrings, and pottery items crafted by around 20 local artisans. Dawkins is preparing to invest approximately £20,000 to renovate the new space ahead of an anticipated opening in March 2024.
Dawkins commented on the challenges faced over the past year, saying, “This last year has been a tough one for us, but we are very happy to know how loved our shop is by our community.” The support from local customers has been crucial during this transition.
### Changes in County Square
The news of Made in Ashford’s new location comes amid other changes in County Square. The stationery brand Smiggle has recently closed its doors, having operated in the centre since October 2017. A notice posted in the shop’s window expressed gratitude to customers for their loyalty, while also announcing the closure as part of the conclusion of the current leasing agreement. The nearest remaining branch is located in Canterbury.
As the local shopping landscape continues to evolve, Dawkins and her team at Made in Ashford are ready to embrace this new chapter, aiming to enhance their offerings and strengthen their connection with the community.
