London has been named the most powerful city in the world for the 14th consecutive time, according to the 2026 edition of the Global Power City Index. This influential ranking measures the “magnetism” of cities worldwide, assessing their ability to attract people, capital, and businesses.

The Global Power City Index evaluates cities based on six key categories: economy, research and development, cultural interaction, liveability, environment, and accessibility. Each category is derived from an analysis of 72 different metrics. Liveability is determined by factors such as housing costs and quality of life, while environmental criteria include air quality and waste recycling rates.

With an overall score of 1,642.2 out of 2,700, London excelled particularly in cultural interaction, benefiting from its renowned museums, vibrant nightlife, diverse restaurants, and hotels. The city also performed well in the economy, accessibility, and research and development categories, which contributed to its high ranking.

Despite this success, London’s scores in the liveability and environment categories were notably lower. High rental prices and the ongoing cost of living crisis have made living in the city increasingly challenging for residents. This reality is not surprising to those who have experienced the housing market in London firsthand.

In the latest ranking, London outperformed several major global cities. Tokyo secured the second spot, with its strengths lying in liveability and cultural interaction. New York, which came in third, maintained a strong presence in the economy and research and development sectors but saw a decline in liveability and environmental scores.

The full list of the ten most powerful cities in the world for 2026 is as follows:

1. London
2. Tokyo
3. New York
4. Paris
5. Singapore
6. Seoul
7. Amsterdam
8. Shanghai
9. Dubai
10. Berlin

This latest ranking highlights London’s ongoing global influence, while also shedding light on the challenges it faces regarding affordability and environmental sustainability. As cities continue to compete for talent and investment, maintaining a balance between growth and livability will be crucial for London and others in the years to come.
