Mark Robins Recognized with Prestigious Coventry Award of Merit
Former Coventry City manager Mark Robins has received the esteemed Coventry Award of Merit, joining five other notable individuals recognized for their commitment to the city. This award, established by the Coventry City Council in the 1960s, honours those who have significantly contributed to local communities, education, and efforts towards peace and friendship.
The award aims to acknowledge exemplary citizenship and enhance Coventry’s reputation. Since its inception, the council has held only eight award ceremonies, recognising a total of 46 individuals and organisations. Notable past recipients include Olympic athlete David Moorcroft, former Jaguar head Sir John Egan, and the acclaimed poet Philip Larkin.
Robins, along with fellow honorees including Two-Tone singer Pauline Black and Professor Stuart Croft, expressed gratitude for the honour during the award event. In his remarks, he stated, “I was at an event on Wednesday in Coventry for an award that they kindly bestowed upon me and I’m really humbled to have received.”
The manager of Championship club Stoke City reflected on the significance of community support in football, saying, “I spoke about Stoke and our city motto and the reason behind it and the power that can generate with supporters and the club and the players.” He emphasized the importance of harnessing community spirit to foster positive experiences.
Robins’ contributions to football in Coventry have not gone unnoticed. In November 2022, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Coventry University for his significant impact on both the sport and the local community. This recognition came shortly after he was dismissed from Coventry City due to a challenging start to the season. Despite this setback, he remains celebrated as the club’s most successful manager since Jimmy Hill in the 1960s, having led the team from League Two to a competitive position in the Championship over his seven-year tenure.
The Coventry Award of Merit continues to serve as a testament to the individuals who embody the spirit of the city. As Robins and his fellow awardees join the ranks of distinguished honorees, their contributions are expected to inspire future generations.
