Nottingham Forest Legend John Robertson Remembered by Family
The family of Nottingham Forest legend John Robertson has issued a heartfelt tribute following his death at the age of 72. Robertson passed away peacefully on Christmas morning after a prolonged illness, surrounded by his loved ones. He is celebrated for scoring the winning goal in the 1980 European Cup final and is regarded as a significant figure in both club and international football.
In a statement shared by Nottingham Forest, Robertson was remembered fondly by his wife, Sharyl, daughter Liz, and sons Andrew and Mark, alongside granddaughters Jess and Phoebe. The family expressed their deep sorrow, stating, “It is with immense pain and sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful husband, dad and grandad. Our only comfort in our grief is that his struggles are now over, and he is reunited with daughter Jessica.”
John Robertson is celebrated not only as a footballing icon but also as a devoted family man. The family’s tribute highlighted his kindness, humor, and unwavering loyalty, stating, “Although our hearts are breaking, we will always be grateful for the years we were privileged to share with him and the amazing memories we made.”
Robertson earned 28 caps for the Scottish national team, representing his country in the 1978 World Cup in Argentina and the 1982 World Cup in Spain. He was a key player in Brian Clough‘s formidable Nottingham Forest team, which clinched the First Division title in 1978 and achieved back-to-back European Cup victories in 1979 and 1980. Over his illustrious career, he made 502 appearances for Nottingham Forest, scoring 95 goals and establishing himself as one of the game’s most gifted wingers.
Following his playing career, Robertson joined the coaching staff of Martin O’Neill at clubs including Celtic and Aston Villa, further contributing to the sport he loved.
