Royal Family’s Christmas Revealed: Shared Rooms and Fish Finger Beds
The Royal Family gathered at Sandringham on December 25, 2023, to celebrate Christmas together. Among those present were King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, Princess Catherine, and their three children. The festive gathering also included Prince Edward and his family, along with Mike and Zara Tindall, and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. While the event is a highlight of the royal calendar, the sleeping arrangements at Sandringham House may not be as luxurious as many would expect.
According to reports, Sandringham House accommodates only about 16 to 18 guests, leading to some unconventional sleeping arrangements. A royal expert, Rebecca English, the Royal Editor for The Daily Mail, revealed that some family members may have to share rooms in what has been described as “fish finger” style beds. These beds are said to be narrow, akin to those found in some budget accommodations.
Shared Spaces and Staff Quarters
English further noted that there have been instances where royal family members were required to stay in staff quarters. She stated, “In previous years, I’ve been told that they’ve actually had to kick staff out of their quarters. And Edward and Sophie were put in some of the staff quarters because they had nowhere else to stay.” This suggests that the reality of royal accommodations during the holiday season can be quite different from the glamorous image often portrayed.
While the Prince and Princess of Wales typically spend Christmas Day at Sandringham, they are believed to return to their nearby residence, Anmer Hall, for the night. This arrangement allows them to enjoy a quieter evening with their children away from the festivities.
Continuing the Holiday Spirit
King Charles is expected to remain at Sandringham for a few more days to bask in the holiday atmosphere before returning to royal duties in the New Year. The blend of family gatherings and the rustic charm of Sandringham provides a unique backdrop for the royals during this festive time, despite the more modest accommodations some may face.
As the world watches the Royal Family’s traditions unfold, the realities of their Christmas arrangements serve as a reminder that even those in the spotlight have their own challenges and experiences during the holiday season.
