Serbia’s President Vučić Proposes Elections for May or December 2024
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced that it is realistic for elections to take place in either May or December 2024. This statement follows recent local elections, during which Vučić noted that no complaints were raised regarding the voting process. He asserted that the opposition is aware there were no irregularities, as their representatives were equally or more present at the polling stations.
In an interview with Pink Television, Vučić emphasized that the opposition’s silence on the election results indicates their acknowledgment of a fair process. “There were no objections at the polling places, and none of them congratulated the winner,” he remarked. The President highlighted the lack of recognition from the opposition, stating that the ruling party, SNS (Serbian Progressive Party), received no congratulations despite a significant victory margin of 43 votes in one municipality.
Vučić dismissed claims that the government was involved in vote-buying as “a story for small children.” He stressed the importance of calming tensions and expressed a willingness to engage in discussions about the electoral process.
Reflecting on his own sense of responsibility toward the elections, Vučić mentioned that he contemplates each night about his performance and what the following day holds. He expressed a desire for personal health and success in fulfilling his responsibilities.
He also conveyed a sense of satisfaction when he hears comments from political opponents following elections, particularly when they claim to be “very happy and close to victory.” “As long as they are satisfied when losing elections, I am happy,” he stated, underscoring the idea that elections provide an opportunity for all parties to respect competition.
President Vučić’s comments come as Serbia prepares for potential elections in the coming year, with political dynamics continuing to evolve.
