The Telegraph has recognized a trail in South Shropshire as one of the top eleven winter walks in Britain. Among various scenic routes, the Bury Ditches trail near Clun stands out for its historical significance and stunning landscapes. This selection highlights the appeal of winter walking, showcasing paths that range from tranquil beachfronts to breathtaking hilltop vistas.

The Bury Ditches trail, ranked fourth on the list, measures approximately 6.5 miles (10.4 km) and typically takes between three and four hours to complete. Described by The Telegraph as a prime location for appreciating “ancient earthworks,” the route features one of the best-preserved Iron Age hill forts in the country. Dating back to around 500 BC, Bury Ditches boasts four rings of ramparts that offer panoramic views of the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. Visitors can orient themselves at the summit’s topograph, which provides a comprehensive view of the area.

The return journey of the trail skirts another hill fort and the edge of Radnor Wood, a remnant of the expansive royal hunting forest that once covered the Clun Valley. After completing the walk, visitors can explore the nearby village of Clun, known for its charming atmosphere. Here, the ruined castle and The White Horse, a local pub, invite walkers to relax. The White Horse Inn features cosy guestrooms, creaky floorboards, a roaring fire, home-cooked food, and local ales, with double rooms starting at approximately £66.50, including breakfast.

The Telegraph’s list includes a variety of other winter walks, showcasing the diverse landscapes across the UK. These include:

– Sudeley, Kenelm and Monk’s Hole, starting in Winchcombe, Gloucestershire
– Deeside Way, starting in Aboyne-Ballater, Aberdeenshire
– Vale Trail 2, starting in Monknash, Vale of Glamorgan
– Harbottle and the Drake Stone, starting in Harbottle, Northumberland
