St Mary’s Church in Marshfield has received a Development Grant of up to £125,895 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. This funding aims to support urgent repairs and long-term improvements, covering 75 percent of the development phase budget, which totals £167,045.

Community-Focused Initiatives

Ross Maidment, Ministry Area Leader for the Mountain and Marsh Ministry Area, expressed gratitude for the grant, calling it a significant endorsement for Marshfield and the Gwent Levels. He stated, “This support is a significant vote of confidence in Marshfield and the Gwent Levels, and we are deeply grateful to National Lottery players.” The funding allows the church to address pressing repair needs while simultaneously engaging with the community to shape a project that ensures the preservation of this historical building.

The project will feature various community-driven activities, including heritage initiatives in collaboration with Marshfield Primary School and the Living Levels project. Plans are also underway to involve local youth organizations like Beavers and Cubs, as well as care home residents, in activities that promote connection and learning.

One notable aspect of the initiative is the intention to preserve St Mary’s historic immersion baptistry. Additionally, community members will have opportunities to develop heritage skills through training programs, potentially in partnership with local colleges. By balancing immediate repair needs with long-term ambitions, the project aims to transform the church into a more versatile space for community use.

Growth and Future Potential

The Most Reverend Cherry Vann, Archbishop of Wales and Bishop of Monmouth, highlighted the revitalization efforts led by Reverend Maidment. She noted the church’s growth, evidenced by increased attendance, the establishment of a community choir, and new worshipping communities. “There is clearly potential here for further growth and for greater engagement in and with Marshfield and the wider Newport community,” Ms Vann remarked.

St Mary’s has seen remarkable growth in recent years, with Sunday attendance more than doubling. The church now boasts a Community Choir and Choristership Scheme that attracts between 20 to 30 participants each month. Seasonal civic services and community events regularly draw over 100 attendees.

Nevertheless, church leaders express concerns that the existing building limitations may hinder future development. Ms Vann emphasized that the current infrastructure does not adequately meet the needs of the community, stating, “The building as it stands threatens to limit what can be achieved through not being fit for purpose in terms of size, flexibility, and the resources it has to offer.”

She further added, “I believe it represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to secure the presence of St Mary’s as a place of prayer and worship and a resource for community use for generations to come.”

Over the next year, the church will combine professional expertise with community input to create plans focused on enhancing access, sustainability, and overall usability. This collaborative approach aims not only to maintain the structural integrity of St Mary’s Church but also to enhance its role as a vibrant community hub.
