Thatcham Memorial Foundation Under New Management, Promises Change
The Thatcham Memorial Foundation has announced a new leadership team dedicated to revitalizing community facilities and parkland in Thatcham. With a focus on enhancing public access, the team aims to implement significant improvements throughout the area as it embarks on its journey into 2026 under new management. The foundation has recently undergone a reshuffle, appointing new trustees committed to fostering community engagement.
Originally established shortly after the Second World War, the seven-and-a-half-acre site was acquired from local landowners through public subscription, ensuring it has served as a community facility ever since. The new management expresses enthusiasm about their plans to maximize the use of the park and its amenities, striving to make them accessible to as many residents as possible.
Plans for Improvement and Community Engagement
As part of its initiatives, the Thatcham Memorial Foundation is addressing ongoing issues related to flooding. West Berkshire Council began work last year to mitigate flooding risks in the surrounding fields, although this project has faced challenges related to access routes and pathways. Despite these complications, Vicky Caws, a key member of the new team, highlighted that efforts are underway to restore the park to its former beauty.
Caws mentioned that the team has recently acquired an alleyway near Beverley Close to enhance access for local residents. “There’s a new group of trustees,” she stated. “All of us are massively about community access. Trees were planted this week. The benches are going back in. We want to see people filling the field, playing football and walking their dogs.”
Plans are also in motion to reintroduce popular amenities such as children’s basketball hoops and football goals, which were removed during the flood mitigation works. Furthermore, the foundation is exploring arrangements for improved parking options in the evenings to facilitate easier pick-ups for parents of children involved in Squirrels and Scouts activities.
Community Offers and Future Prospects
In an effort to attract new visitors, the Memorial Hall is currently offering a promotional 50 percent discount on space rentals for events and one-off bookings until the end of April. This initiative aims to showcase the facilities available to the community and encourage greater usage.
Caws expressed optimism about the foundation’s future, stating, “There’s stuff that does need to be done. But there’s much more positive movement. We are all so chuffed. We are putting our energy into positively going forward. Great changes are happening. Things are really looking up.” With the support of Thatcham town councillors, the team is eager to implement their vision for a thriving community space that caters to the diverse needs of local residents.
As the Thatcham Memorial Foundation embarks on this new chapter, the commitment to enhancing community access and engagement sets a promising tone for the future of the area.
