Trump Removes Racist Video of Obamas After Backlash from GOP
Former President Donald Trump has removed a controversial video from his social media platform, Truth Social, depicting former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama as monkeys. The video was online for nearly 12 hours before it was taken down amid widespread condemnation, including pushback from some of Trump’s Republican allies.
Initially, the White House downplayed the incident, referring to public reactions as “fake outrage.” However, the narrative shifted shortly before noon on Friday, when a White House official confirmed to CNN that the post was made by an employee “by mistake” and that it had been deleted.
The video garnered significant criticism, particularly from within the Republican Party. Tim Scott, the only Black Republican senator and chair of the GOP Senate campaign committee, condemned the video, stating, “I pray this is a mistake because this is the most racist thing I have seen from this White House. The president needs to remove it.” His comments reflect a growing concern among party members regarding the implications of such content.
The backlash against Trump’s post included direct calls from Republican lawmakers urging him to address the issue. Sources familiar with the situation indicated that the pressure from within the party played a crucial role in the decision to delete the video.
As the controversy unfolded, many observers noted the potential impact on the Republican Party’s image, particularly given its efforts to appeal to a diverse electorate. The event underscores ongoing tensions within the party about race and representation. The incident serves as a reminder of the sensitive nature of political discourse and the immediate consequences that can arise from provocative social media posts.
The White House’s handling of the situation has drawn attention to the challenges faced by Trump as he navigates his political future, especially as he seeks to maintain support from party members and the broader electorate.
