Unconventional New Year’s Eve Drops Across the U.S. Celebrate 2026
As the clock approaches midnight on December 31, 2025, communities across the United States will bid farewell to the year with a myriad of unique and eccentric celebrations. While New York City’s iconic Times Square ball drop is renowned worldwide, many towns have embraced their own local traditions, featuring an array of whimsical objects descending to mark the New Year.
In **Plymouth, Wisconsin**, a giant cheese wedge will be lowered, while **Las Cruces, New Mexico**, opts for a chile pepper. **Flagstaff, Arizona**, features a pinecone, and **Key West, Florida**, celebrates with a conch shell. The state of Pennsylvania stands out with a particularly eclectic mix of drops, including a bologna drop in **Lebanon**, a pickle drop in **Dillsburg**, and a potato chip drop in **Lewistown**.
These unique traditions find their roots in the original ball drop that occurred in Times Square in **1907**, when a **318-kilogram** ball first descended, inspiring countless copycat celebrations across the country. The popularity of these quirky events has surged, especially since the turn of the millennium, as communities seek to foster local pride and attract visitors.
Fruit-themed drops are particularly popular, reflecting cultural beliefs that consuming certain foods on New Year’s Eve brings good fortune. For instance, **Miami** features its “Big Orange” drop, while **Sarasota, Florida**, showcases a pineapple. Enthusiastic crowds gather for cherry drops in **Milwaukie, Oregon**, and **Traverse City, Michigan**. **Temecula, California**, will see brightly illuminated grapes descend, while **Atlanta** introduces a new twist this year with a “digital drone peach in the sky,” replacing the traditional peach drop.
Maritime-themed celebrations also capture attention along the coast. **Folly Beach, South Carolina**, will see sparkly flip-flops drop, while **Panama City Beach, Florida**, hosts a festive event where **15,000 beach balls** rain down on revelers before a giant beach ball makes its midnight descent from a tower. In **Mobile, Alabama**, a **272-kilogram** MoonPie will take a **60-second** descent, promising a sweet follow-up with slices of MoonPie cake for attendees.
Aquatic traditions highlight the cultural heritage of waterfront towns. **Brunswick, Georgia**, hosts a shrimp drop, while **Easton, Maryland**, brings its annual crab drop to the forefront. The oyster drop in **Bay St. Louis, Mississippi**, draws significant attention, but perhaps the most notable catch occurs in **Port Clinton, Ohio**, where a **272-kilogram** fiberglass walleye named Wylie takes center stage, originally crafted from papier-mâché **30 years ago**.
Food themes dominate many of these celebrations. Just outside **Chicago**, **Whiting, Indiana**, will drop a **3-metre** pierogi. The **Idaho Potato Drop** in **Boise** has become a beloved tradition over the past decade, while **Mt. Olive, North Carolina**, features a glittery green pickle almost **1.8 metres** long in honor of its local pickle brand.
While these events are designed to celebrate community spirit and attract tourism, not all traditions have been embraced without controversy. In **western North Carolina**, the practice of lowering a live possum in a glass box at midnight was discontinued in **2019** following protests and legal challenges. Nonetheless, a similar event continues in **Tallapoosa, Georgia**, where a stuffed possum named Spencer takes the place of the live animal.
As the New Year approaches, these quirky drops exemplify the creativity and local flavor that define New Year’s celebrations across the United States. Whether it’s a giant cheese wedge or a colorful pickle, each drop brings communities together in a shared moment of joy and anticipation for the year ahead.
