US Announces Withdrawal from Venice Commission, President Expresses Regret

The United States has initiated the process of withdrawing from the Venice Commission, an advisory body of the Council of Europe focused on constitutional law. The announcement has prompted a statement of regret from the Commission’s President, Marta Kartabia, who emphasized the significance of the US’s involvement in promoting democratic values globally.

In her statement, Kartabia expressed her disappointment regarding the decision made by the US administration. She noted, “I regret to hear of the decision by the President of the United States to initiate withdrawal from the Venice Commission. The US became a full member of the Commission in April 2013, having previously held observer status since 1991.”

During its membership, US representatives have played a vital role alongside 60 other European and non-European members in advancing the ideals of democracy through law. Kartabia highlighted the Commission’s aim to assist democratically elected governments in fostering social and economic welfare while safeguarding individual rights without discrimination.

The Venice Commission has been instrumental in aiding numerous countries in adopting constitutional and legal reforms intended to uphold democratic values, human rights, and the rule of law. This work is conducted with full respect for the principles of national sovereignty and constitutional pluralism.
