Waverly’s Kulzer Crowned 72nd Princess Kay of the Milky Way
Waverly’s own Kulzer was crowned the 72nd Princess Kay of the Milky Way on August 23, 2023, marking the beginning of her role as ambassador for the state of Minnesota’s approximately 1,800 dairy farm families. The ceremony took place at the Minnesota State Fair, a significant annual event that draws thousands of visitors each year.
Dressed in a tiara and adorned with a sash over her coat, Kulzer described the experience as “unreal,” reflecting on the legacy of her family. Her mother was a finalist for the title in 1996, and Kulzer shared a special connection to that moment. She revealed that the butter carving knife used in her mother’s competition is still in use today at the fair’s butter booth, symbolizing the continuity of tradition within the event.
The annual celebration features ten finalists, each of whom will have their portraits sculpted live from butter in front of fairgoers. This unique experience allows attendees to witness the artistry involved while honoring the dairy industry. After the fair, each contestant will take home their butter head, a keepsake from their time as finalists.
The Princess Kay title is a cherished role in Minnesota, emphasizing the importance of dairy farming in the state’s culture and economy. As ambassador, Kulzer will not only represent the dairy community but also engage with the public, fostering awareness about the contributions of dairy farmers.
Kulzer’s crowning and the butter sculpting tradition highlight the blend of agriculture and artistry that defines the Minnesota State Fair. As she embarks on her new responsibilities, Kulzer looks forward to promoting the values and hard work of dairy farmers throughout the state.
