Will Young Delivers £50,000 in Dog Food to Scottish Charities
Singer and dog food entrepreneur Will Young has made a significant impact on animal welfare by delivering thousands of meals to dogs in need in Edinburgh. As part of his mission to support canine charities, Young announced a donation of £50,000 worth of food to various frontline organizations across the UK. His visit to the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home marked the final stop on his promotional tour for his pet food brand, Miraculous Meals, which he co-founded in 2023.
During his visit, Young expressed his commitment to addressing the ongoing crisis in dog rescue centers. “I’m here today with my dog food brand, and we set it up because we have rescue dogs and saw a crisis in the dog rescue centres across the UK,” he stated. Young, who adopted his two dogs from a kill shelter, highlighted the alarming statistic that between 50,000 and 80,000 dogs are euthanized in the UK each year. He emphasized the urgent need for support, saying, “Rescue centres are at a crisis point at the moment.”
Support for Local Charities and Dogs in Need
The Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, which has been operating for over 140 years, plays a critical role in the community. Young remarked on the “kindness of Scots people” and the importance of continued support for the charity. “But the crisis is very real—donations, volunteering, adopting and fostering are needed,” he urged. He encouraged those facing difficulties to reach out to local centers, emphasizing the importance of keeping dogs in their homes.
Young’s personal connection with rescue dogs further drives his passion for this cause. “All of us have been let down in some way, but all of us want a second chance, and so when you get that with your dog, that connection is incredible,” he noted. This heartfelt sentiment resonates not only with his supporters but also with the broader community that values animal welfare.
Rachael Halliday, an animal welfare carer and training officer at the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, expressed gratitude for Young’s involvement. “The donations are going to go out into our food banks, where we provide meals for pets to keep them in their homes,” she explained, adding that the charity supports individuals facing various challenges, from job loss to unexpected expenses. “It’s totally judgment-free,” Halliday assured.
Impact of the Cost of Living Crisis
This year, the charity has already distributed nearly 500,000 meals to families in need, but the ongoing cost of living crisis poses challenges to their operations. Halliday emphasized the rising costs of veterinary care and food, stating, “Everyone is struggling at the moment.” She highlighted the importance of continued donations as winter approaches, noting, “We need to keep them all cosy.”
With Young’s high-profile support, there is hope that increased awareness will lead to more donations, enabling the charity to provide for the animals in their care. As the community rallies around this cause, the shared goal remains clear: to help dogs find their forever homes and ensure they receive the care they deserve.
