Wrexham Heroes Shortlisted for Coveted St David Awards
A prison officer and a former Royal Engineer from Wrexham have been honoured as finalists for the esteemed St David Awards, recognizing their exceptional contributions to the community. Robert Scott and James Reilly were named finalists by First Minister Eluned Morgan, reflecting the spirit of achievement celebrated across Wales.
Outstanding Acts of Bravery and Service
The St David Awards, which have acknowledged over 300 individuals since their inception 13 years ago, aim to highlight the remarkable efforts of people making a difference in society. Each of the eleven award categories features three finalists, selected by an independent panel. The winners will be determined by the First Minister.
James Reilly, nominated for a Bravery Award, performed a heroic rescue at Greenfield Valley Heritage Park. The former Royal Engineer and current plumber jumped into icy waters to save a woman struggling to stay afloat. Supported by bystanders and fire officer Chris Argent, Reilly worked tirelessly for over an hour until emergency services arrived, showcasing his quick thinking and courage in a life-threatening situation.
In contrast, Robert Scott has been shortlisted for a Public Service Award for his transformative work in education at HMP Berwyn. Initially a participant in the Young Adults Training pilot, Scott excelled and completed the Level 2 Train the Trainer qualification with Adult Learning Wales. He now facilitates peer-led training for fellow prison officers, inspiring them to pursue their own educational journeys. His efforts have strengthened collaborations between Adult Learning Wales, the Prison Officers Association, and HMP Berwyn, highlighting the importance of continuous learning within public service.
A Celebration of Welsh Excellence
The recognition of Scott and Reilly underscores the positive impact individuals can have on their communities. First Minister Eluned Morgan remarked, “It’s a privilege to announce the finalists of the St David Awards. It brings together the best of Wales, with fantastic examples of the positive contribution people can make to other people’s lives.” She expressed admiration for the inspirational stories and impressive achievements represented this year.
Winners will be awarded a trophy crafted by ceramicist Daniel Boyle from Lampeter. The awards ceremony is scheduled for February 26, 2026, at the Senedd in Cardiff, marking a night of celebration for the contributions of individuals like Scott and Reilly to Welsh society.
