Zabjelo Football Club Aims for Promotion with Strong Community Support
Zabjelo Football Club, a local team from the Podgorica neighborhood, is generating significant excitement as it aims for promotion in the regional league. Known for its passionate fan base and rich history, the club has become a source of pride for the community, described by its president, Mirko Jokovic, as the “pride of the Republic.” The team is currently in second place in the Third League, just four points behind leaders Balkan Iglsi, with ambitions to ascend to a higher division.
The fervent support from fans is evident during matches, where atmosphere is electric, showcasing elaborate choreographies, flares, and songs of encouragement. This unwavering dedication has helped boost attendance, surpassing that of many teams in higher leagues. “Our matches are a celebration of sport,” Jokovic stated, highlighting the diverse age range of supporters, from children to seniors.
With ten consecutive victories in recent matches, Zabjelo has a crucial derby against Balkan Iglsi approaching. “This is an opportunity to close the gap,” Jokovic emphasized, noting the importance of this weekend’s clash. The team has undergone a coaching change earlier in the season, which has since revitalized their performance, improving both their win record and goal difference.
As the club prepares for the spring season, they have strengthened their squad by bringing in nine new players during the winter break. Jokovic expressed optimism about the mix of youth and experience within the new lineup, which includes Bogdan Milic, a robust striker who has joined at the request of head coach Miloš Lakić.
Zabjelo has historical roots in the second division, with memorable matches in the past, including a playoff against Mogren in 2013. The club is focused on returning to the Second League, which Jokovic believes is essential for future growth. He noted that while their stadium does not meet top-tier standards, the club is committed to steady progress and community engagement.
Financial support plays a crucial role in the club’s ambitions. Through partnerships with local sponsors, including the main supporter, Lob, and potential new sponsors like Lovćen Bank and Eurozox, Zabjelo seeks to enhance its financial stability. “We are working hard to secure funding,” Jokovic mentioned, emphasizing the necessity of community contributions to keep the club afloat.
At a recent meeting initiated by Podgorica’s mayor, Prof. Dr. Saša Mujović, discussions were held to gather support for local football clubs. Mujović noted the importance of clubs like Zabjelo in fostering community spirit and engagement. He pledged to assist in attracting sponsors to ensure the club’s success.
With the backing of dedicated fans and local leaders, Zabjelo Football Club is poised for a promising future, aiming not only for promotion but for a lasting legacy in Montenegrin football. As the season unfolds, the club’s commitment to excellence and community engagement remains steadfast, with hopes of celebrating significant achievements by the end of the year.
