Family Members Sentenced for Years of Sexual Abuse of Young Girl
A young girl endured years of horrific abuse at the hands of her father, grandfather, and two brothers, according to court proceedings at Hove Crown Court. The abuse began when she was just six years old and continued for years, predominantly occurring within the family’s home in West Sussex. The girl’s mother allegedly ignored the abuse, contributing to the environment of fear and suffering.
The court heard that the girl, who is now a teenager, faced repeated rape and sexual assault from her family members. Her father, aged 43, was convicted of multiple offenses, including five counts of rape of a child under 13 and three counts of cruelty to a person under 16. The mother, also 43, received convictions for cruelty towards her child and false imprisonment.
In addition to the father and mother, the grandfather, aged 70, was found guilty of sexual assault by penetration of a child under 13. The older brother, aged 23, faced serious charges including four counts of rape of a child under 13, while the younger brother, aged 20, was convicted of multiple counts of rape and sexual assault.
The abuse was not limited to sexual violence. The court revealed that when the girl disclosed the abuse to her mother, she faced severe repercussions. She was reportedly beaten, locked in a cupboard, and deprived of food for two days. The girl was also subjected to additional physical abuse, including being burned with cigarettes and beaten with a horse whip.
At the age of 12, the girl found the courage to speak out to her teacher, expressing fear of returning home. She told authorities about the ongoing abuse, stating, “I told how my parents keep abusing me and they’ve been doing it for years. Then I started explaining all the sexual stuff.” Her brave actions led to an investigation that halted the abuse.
The sentences handed down by the court total over 100 years for the family members involved. This case highlights the urgent need for child protection and support systems. Organizations like Rape Crisis England & Wales work tirelessly to address issues of child sexual abuse and provide assistance to victims. They can be reached at their support line, which is available free of charge 24/7 at 0808 500 2222, or through their website at 247sexualabusesupport.org.uk.
