During a focused two-day operation in support of the Lerwick Up Helly Aa, road policing officers in Shetland stopped a total of 49 vehicles to enhance road safety. The initiative, which aimed to address various traffic offences, resulted in several violations being recorded and a range of warnings issued.

Among the offences detected, officers identified 13 instances of speeding, four occasions where seatbelts were not worn, and two cases of insecure loads. Additionally, one driver faced multiple serious charges, including driving without insurance, lacking a valid MOT, dangerous driving, and failing to stop for police.

Focus on Road Safety

In light of these findings, warnings were distributed for 13 speeding offences, one instance of careless driving, two insecure load offences, and six violations related to lighting and licence plates.

Constable Curley, who participated in the operation, emphasized the significance of road safety for the local community. He stated, “Whether you’re heading to work, taking the kids to school, visiting family or moving between the many communities of Shetland, we know how important road safety is to the local community.”

The commitment to improving road safety across the Highlands and Islands remains a priority. Curley highlighted that not wearing a seatbelt, speeding, and careless driving are among the top five factors contributing to serious and fatal road traffic collisions.

Combining Education and Enforcement

The road policing initiative reflects a broader strategy that combines education and enforcement to reduce road casualties. By addressing these common offences, officers aim to foster safer driving habits within the community.

As this operation demonstrates, the local authorities are proactive in their efforts to enhance road safety, ensuring that all road users, whether residents or visitors, adhere to traffic regulations. The results serve as a reminder of the ongoing need for vigilance and responsibility on the roads.
