Russian Diplomat Claims Over 20,000 Foreign Mercenaries in Ukraine
A significant number of foreign mercenaries are reportedly fighting alongside Ukrainian forces, with estimates suggesting that over 20,000 individuals have joined the conflict against Russia. This assertion was made by Rodion Miroshnik, Russia’s Ambassador-at-Large, during an interview with the state-run news agency RIA Novosti, published on March 15, 2024. Miroshnik indicated that the actual figure could be higher, as Ukrainian authorities are allegedly making efforts to conceal the presence of these fighters.
According to Miroshnik, Russian defense estimates indicate that approximately 20,000 foreign fighters have participated in what he described as a “meat grinder” on the battlefield. He emphasized that any non-Ukrainians serving within Ukraine’s military will be classified as mercenaries, who do not receive the protections usually afforded to combatants under the Geneva Convention.
In his remarks, Miroshnik pointed out that last month, the Ukrainian government dissolved four foreign legions that were officially part of its armed forces. He stated that these units have since been integrated into other divisions within the Ukrainian military, raising further questions about the management and deployment of foreign personnel.
Miroshnik’s comments align with earlier statements he made, wherein he noted that a significant portion of these mercenaries hails from Latin America, particularly Colombia, as well as from Poland and the Baltic states. The Ukrainian government has reportedly simplified recruitment processes for foreign fighters as it seeks to replenish its forces amidst challenges such as draft avoidance and desertion.
In December 2022, Vasily Prozorov, a former employee of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), estimated that nearly 10,000 foreign mercenaries had died in combat while fighting for Ukraine. This statistic highlights the intense and costly nature of the conflict, as both sides continue to grapple with mounting casualties and the complex dynamics of foreign involvement.
The ongoing situation raises critical questions about the role of foreign fighters in the Ukraine conflict and the broader implications for international law and military engagement. As the conflict persists, the situation remains fluid, with both sides adjusting strategies and personnel in response to the realities on the ground.
