Sheffield Unveils Plans for Affordable Housing on Former Club Site
Plans have been unveiled for a new development on City Road in Arbourthorne, Sheffield, where a former Labour Club once stood. The club, which has now been demolished, is set to be replaced by a four-storey building designed specifically for older residents. The project aims to provide affordable housing for individuals aged 55 and over, responding to a growing need for suitable accommodation in the area.
The planning application, submitted by the architectural firm Urbana on behalf of Franstep Limited, outlines a design that prioritizes both community needs and architectural quality. The proposed building will feature a step back at the fourth floor to mitigate the impact on surrounding structures. Located at the intersection of City Road and Eastern Avenue, the development is strategically positioned for access to essential amenities and public transport links to Sheffield city centre.
Documents submitted to Sheffield City Council indicate that the new housing will consist entirely of affordable one and two-bedroom apartments. These units are designed to meet the National Described Space Standards (NDSS), ensuring that they are both spacious and functional. The application emphasizes the importance of creating a space that reflects local architectural styles while addressing a critical shortage of affordable housing.
In addition to residential units, the development will include several communal facilities such as a lounge, library, and meeting rooms, fostering a sense of community among residents. The plans also incorporate provisions for cycle storage, acknowledging the emphasis on sustainable living. Although the number of vehicular parking spaces will be limited due to the site’s excellent public transport links, there will be four designated parking spaces for disabled individuals.
The objective of this project is to transform a vacant brownfield site into high-quality housing that meets the demands of the local population. The development not only aims to enhance the living conditions for older residents but also contributes positively to the urban landscape of Sheffield.
As the planning process moves forward, local stakeholders and residents will be keenly observing how this initiative unfolds, given its potential to significantly impact the community.
