Trump Disrupts Oval Office Meeting Over Distracting Phone Noise
Donald Trump demonstrated his low tolerance for distractions during a press conference in the Oval Office on August 25, 2025. While he was answering questions following the signing of several executive orders, a loud cell phone interrupted the proceedings, prompting the president to order a prominent staffer to leave the room.
The incident occurred as Trump was addressing a question about the U.S. government’s recent acquisition of a portion of Intel. He began, “As you know the stock market went up almost a thousand points on Friday and it went up not because of…” before pausing abruptly. “Hello, who is that? Alright, get out of the room!” he exclaimed, as laughter erupted from those present. The staffer at the center of the disruption was identified as White House staff secretary Will Scharf.
Will Scharf plays a crucial role in the White House, responsible for delivering physical copies of executive orders to the president during signing ceremonies and explaining their significance. Just moments before the interruption, Scharf had been beside Trump, assisting with the documents. Trump’s frustration was evident, as he has a history of responding sharply to disruptions, especially during public appearances.
This is not the first time Trump has reacted strongly to interruptions in the Oval Office. In June 2019, he expressed visible irritation when his then acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, coughed during a live interview with ABC News. Trump demanded, “If you’re going to cough, please leave the room! You just can’t, you just can’t cough,” showcasing his desire for a controlled environment while addressing the media.
The incident with Scharf highlights the intense atmosphere that often surrounds Trump’s media engagements, where every detail is scrutinized. The quick dismissal of his staffer underscores the president’s focus on maintaining a specific narrative and image during press interactions.
As the Oval Office remains a focal point for national media, such interruptions can lead to significant distractions, impacting the message the president aims to convey. The event serves as a reminder of the high-stakes environment within the White House, where even minor disturbances can lead to immediate consequences.
