Astronomers Investigate 3I/ATLAS as Potential Alien Probe
Astronomers are closely examining the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, which has sparked renewed speculation about the possibility of extraterrestrial intelligence. Detected by a survey telescope in Chile in July, this celestial visitor is only the third known object to pass through our solar system from interstellar space. As it approaches Earth, set to make its closest encounter on December 19, 2023, the scientific community has mobilised to investigate its origins and characteristics.
Most scientists believe 3I/ATLAS is a natural comet, composed of an icy core and a dusty tail. Yet, the idea that it could be an artificial probe has not been entirely dismissed. The Breakthrough Listen project, a prominent initiative aimed at identifying signs of intelligent life, has focused its efforts on this object. They deployed the Green Bank Telescope, the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope, to search for any electronic signals that might suggest technological origins.
The telescope conducted observations the day before the closest approach, aiming to detect any potential transmissions from the object that could indicate it is more than just a natural phenomenon. The findings, recently detailed in a paper yet to undergo peer review, revealed no evidence of artificial signals. The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI) confirmed this lack of evidence, stating, “No artificial radio emission localised to 3I/ATLAS was detected.” According to SETI, the data suggests that the object is silent, cold, and likely devoid of life.
Despite the disappointing results for those hopeful of making contact, researchers acknowledge the importance of studying 3I/ATLAS. They highlighted that it remains a fascinating target for further observation, considering the overall rarity of interstellar objects.
One prominent voice in the discussion is Avi Loeb, a physicist from Harvard University, who has meticulously analysed the object’s behaviour and attributes. He has noted what he calls “anomalies,” including its suspected large size and an unusually fine-tuned trajectory that brings it remarkably close to major planets such as Mars, Venus, and Jupiter.
Loeb developed a metric called the “Loeb scale” to evaluate the likelihood of interstellar objects being of artificial origin. On this scale, which ranges from zero for natural rocks to ten for confirmed alien technology, he initially rated 3I/ATLAS at a four, indicating moderate suspicion of non-natural origins. He has stated he will not revise this rating until more data is released and thoroughly examined.
The Breakthrough Listen research paper acknowledges the current absence of evidence supporting the idea that 3I/ATLAS is anything but a natural object. Nevertheless, it emphasizes the need for continued investigation. “Given the small number of such objects known (only three to date) and the plausibility of interstellar probes as a technosignature, thorough study is warranted,” the report concluded.
Sceptics argue that if 3I/ATLAS were an alien craft, it would likely be transmitting signals, particularly in light of Earth’s considerable radio emissions. The lack of detectable signals bolsters the theory that the object is a significant mass of carbon dioxide and water ice rather than an extraterrestrial probe. However, researchers caution that a comprehensive analysis of the data from its closest approach could take months. Until then, the debate about the true nature of 3I/ATLAS continues, keeping the possibility of discovery alive.
