Brechin City and Banks o’ Dee Share Spoils in Thrilling Draw
Brechin City and Banks o’ Dee concluded their encounter at Glebe Park with a 1-1 draw on February 3, 2024. The result saw Brechin slip off the top position in the Breedon Highland League. Brad McKay opened the scoring for Brechin early in the match, but Ashton Leiper equalized shortly thereafter, leading to a gripping contest that ultimately ended level.
The draw leaves Banks o’ Dee in eighth place, now 15 points behind the league leaders, although they maintain three games in hand. This match marked the final meeting between the two clubs in the Breedon Highland League, with Brechin remaining unbeaten in their eight league encounters against Banks o’ Dee. Notably, all four previous matches held at Glebe Park had also ended in draws.
Match Highlights
Banks o’ Dee started with early pressure, but it was Brechin who struck first. In the eighth minute, a corner taken by Grady McGrath was mishandled by goalkeeper Matthew Duncan, allowing McKay to head the ball into the net. Just six minutes later, Banks o’ Dee responded. Jevan Anderson’s pass to Kane Winton set up Leiper, who finished from 12 yards to level the score.
Following the equalizer, Banks o’ Dee maintained their offensive momentum. Liam Duell and Winton both forced saves from Brechin goalkeeper Craig Hepburn as they continued to press forward. Brechin had their chances too, with Finlay Allan and Cillian Sheridan both forcing routine saves from Duncan.
As the first half drew to a close, Banks o’ Dee’s penalty appeal was dismissed when a shot from Zack Stephen hit Euan Spark’s arm, leaving the score at 1-1 at halftime.
Second Half Action
The second half saw a continuation of the first-half’s competitive spirit, with Banks o’ Dee appearing more likely to take the lead. Sam Pugh nearly scored with a curling shot, while a drive from Joe McCabe was blocked after Brechin struggled to clear a corner.
Brechin began to increase their attacking efforts as the match neared its conclusion. In the 73rd minute, Finlay Allan broke through but missed the target from the left side of the penalty area. With five minutes remaining, McGrath had a golden opportunity when Sheridan’s pass sent him clear, but he shot just wide of the right post.
The final chance fell to Banks o’ Dee in stoppage time. Substitute Michael Philipson’s shot from 16 yards narrowly missed, leaving both teams to settle for a draw.
Other matches in the Highland League included Brora Rangers’ 3-0 victory over Wick Academy, which placed Brora third in the standings, and Formartine United’s 3-1 comeback win against Turriff United, allowing them to take the top spot. Clachnacuddin defeated Lossiemouth 2-0, while Forres Mechanics triumphed 4-0 over Inverurie Locos.
As the league progresses, Brechin City and Banks o’ Dee will look to regroup and build on their performances in the coming matches.
