Forres Mechanics Triumph in North of Scotland Cup Final
Forres Mechanics secured a thrilling victory in the North of Scotland Cup, overcoming Clachnacuddin 3-2 in a dramatic final held at Nairn’s Station Park. The match, which took place on Saturday, marked the club’s remarkable comeback from a two-goal deficit, with defender Ryan McRitchie scoring a pivotal equaliser. This victory represents McRitchie’s third triumph in the tournament, having previously won the cup with Rothes in 2021 and Brora Rangers last year.
Reflecting on the match, McRitchie expressed his deep connection to Forres Mechanics, stating, “I’ve been at a few clubs over the years, but I’ve felt most comfortable here at Forres; it feels like home.” After a brief stint at Brora, where he rejoined the Mechanics just three months later, McRitchie emphasized the importance of camaraderie within the team. He highlighted the resilience displayed during the final, noting, “We showed a lot of character in what was a huge game for us and it was great we managed to push through.”
The final moments of the match were particularly memorable for McRitchie, who capitalized on a misjudgment from Clachnacuddin’s goalkeeper Mark Ridgers to score. “There was a bit of luck with Mark Ridgers dropping it, but I anticipated it and managed to get there to score which was really pleasing,” he recounted. This decisive moment shifted the momentum of the match, leading Forres to dominate thereafter.
McRitchie also took the opportunity to praise his manager, Steven MacDonald, with whom he has developed a strong rapport over the years. “I would almost class the manager as a mate, although he is the manager and I have that respect for him,” McRitchie remarked, acknowledging MacDonald’s faith in the players.
Huntly Prepares for Shield Challenge Against Aberdeen
Meanwhile, Huntly is gearing up for a challenging encounter against Aberdeen in the first round of the Morrison Motors Aberdeenshire Shield at Christie Park on Tuesday night. Manager Colin Charlesworth has urged his players to maintain confidence as they seek to overcome the formidable Dons, who compete at a full-time level. Huntly enters this match on the back of a difficult run, having won only once in their last nine matches across all competitions.
Despite the recent struggles, Charlesworth remains optimistic about his team’s potential. He stated, “In terms of our levels of performance, we’re not far away, but it’s about turning performances into results.” The manager underscored the importance of cup competitions, expressing a desire for his team to progress further in their quest for silverware.
He challenged his squad to aspire to make history by becoming the first Huntly team to win the Shield. “You play football to try to win things, and that’s what we want to do,” he said, emphasizing the need to focus solely on the upcoming match against Aberdeen.
As they prepare for this challenging fixture, Charlesworth recognizes the quality of the opposition. “They’ll be fit, energetic full-time players with a lot of quality on the ball,” he noted, aware of the unpredictability surrounding the lineup that Aberdeen may field. “Regardless of the personnel involved, there will be a lot of quality in Aberdeen’s side,” he added, acknowledging the strength of the Dons, who have already secured the Aberdeenshire Cup this season.
Both Forres Mechanics and Huntly are looking to build on their recent performances, with each club aiming to forge a successful path in their respective competitions. With the North of Scotland Cup secured, McRitchie and his teammates hope this victory will serve as a catalyst for further success in the league, while Huntly seeks to turn the tide in their form against a challenging opponent.
