Guildford MP Celebrates 40 Years of Innovation at SSTL

Guildford MP Zoë Franklin visited Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) on March 15, 2024, to commemorate the company’s 40th anniversary. This occasion allowed Franklin to explore SSTL’s recent satellite projects and its contributions to the local economy and the UK’s burgeoning space sector.

SSTL, based at the Surrey Research Park, was founded in 1985 by Professor Sir Martin Sweeting. The firm has evolved from a University of Surrey spinout into a global leader in small satellite development, known for its innovative and cost-effective engineering solutions. To date, the company has successfully launched over 70 satellite missions, playing a crucial role in making space more accessible.

Engaging with Staff and Discussing Innovation

During her visit, Franklin participated in SSTL’s weekly “Family Meeting,” addressing the staff about her political journey and the significance of supporting high-tech industries in the region. She underscored the importance of companies like SSTL in fostering innovation, generating high-skilled employment, and ensuring the UK maintains its competitive edge in science and technology.

Following her address, Franklin toured the company’s specialized “cleanroom” facilities, where she was accompanied by SSTL’s managing director, Andrew Cawthorne, and founder Prof. Sir Martin Sweeting. They showcased various satellite missions currently under development, including Earth observation satellites and communication platforms.
