Nairn County Secures Third Consecutive Victory in Highland League
Nairn County achieved a decisive 4-0 victory over Rothes in the Breedon Highland League, marking their third consecutive win. The match took place at Station Park, where goals from Ben Barron, Andrew Greig, Calum MacKay, and Angus Dey solidified Nairn’s strong home performance. This victory not only boosts their confidence but also signals a return to form, as it is their first streak of three wins since November 2023. Nairn has accumulated 13 points from a possible 18 at home this season, while Rothes remains without a win, their last success recorded on November 2, 2023.
Match Highlights
The match began with Nairn dominating possession and creating early chances. MacKay’s free-kicks from the left caused issues for Rothes, with one drifting just wide and another tipped over by goalkeeper Stewart Black. The home side missed a significant opportunity to take the lead in the 12th minute when Sam Gordon crossed for MacKay, who headed wide from a promising position.
Rothes responded with a free-kick from Thomas Brady, which prompted a save from Nairn’s goalkeeper, Lewis Munro. However, it was Nairn who struck first in the 26th minute. Gordon’s cross-cum-shot was nudged in by Barron, despite Rothes’ claims for offside being dismissed by the officials. Just before halftime, Nairn doubled their advantage when Greig scored after receiving a precise delivery from Jamie Carnihan.
Second Half Dominance
As the second half began, Rothes needed an early goal to keep their hopes alive. Instead, Nairn continued to apply pressure, with Dey’s shot blocked following a corner kick. In the 58th minute, MacKay secured Nairn’s third goal with a header following a well-placed cross from Greig.
Rothes had a chance to respond in the 65th minute, with Owen Alexander setting up Ruairi Duncan for a shot that Munro saved brilliantly. The missed opportunity proved costly, as Nairn scored their fourth just three minutes later when Dey finished expertly from the edge of the area.
Despite the match’s outcome being decided, both teams had further chances. Greig’s free-kick narrowly missed, while Rothes’ Thomson saw a cross deflected over the bar.
Other matches in the Highland League included Formartine United’s 3-1 victory over Buckie Thistle, with a hat-trick from Hamish Ritchie. Fraserburgh continued their strong form with a 2-0 win over Keith, and Inverurie Locos also claimed victory with a 2-0 result against Lossiemouth.
In the Highland League Cup, Brora Rangers advanced with a dominant 6-0 victory against Strathspey Thistle, while Forres Mechanics triumphed 6-0 over Wick Academy, showcasing their offensive prowess early in the competition.
