New Children’s Science Centre Set to Open in Scunthorpe
A new educational centre dedicated to science and technology for children is poised to open in Scunthorpe, offering free entry to visitors. The centre, named Discover@20-21, is set to launch on October 30, 2023, and aims to engage families with a range of interactive experiences. Located at the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre in Church Square, the centre will be open from Tuesday to Saturday, between 10:00 and 16:00.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by the North Lincolnshire Council to inspire future generations of artists, inventors, scientists, and engineers. Following the renovation of the historic Grade II* listed St John’s Church, the new facility is designed to blend creativity, science, and imagination in an accessible environment.
Council leader Cllr Rob Waltham expressed enthusiasm about the opening, stating, “Discover@20-21 is a brilliant new space for families to explore, get creative and have fun together. It’s exciting, hands-on, and totally different – a place where children can see how imagination and innovation can shape the world around them.”
In addition, Cllr John Davison, cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, remarked on the significance of the centre for the local community. “This is another fantastic addition to Scunthorpe town centre—something that families can enjoy together and that makes learning feel like an adventure. It’s about creating opportunities, sparking curiosity and giving every child the chance to see just how exciting discovery can be.”
The £2.5 million project was first announced in March 2023 and is funded through the Government Towns Fund. The investment encompasses not only the establishment of Discover@20-21 but also the restoration of the church that will house it.
Planning documents reveal that the centre will feature a retractable gallery lighting system, interactive exhibits, and advanced projection technology, including a prominent screen described as the “Big Wow!” of the attraction. These features aim to enhance the visitor experience and provide engaging educational content.
The council anticipates that Discover@20-21 will increase visitor numbers to the Visual Arts Centre by 10 percent, contributing to the cultural landscape of Scunthorpe. With its commitment to free access, the centre hopes to attract families eager to explore the wonders of science and technology together.
As the opening day approaches, excitement builds within the community for what promises to be a transformative addition to local educational resources.
