Sandwick Launches Community Energy Project to Cut Bills

A new initiative in Sandwick aims to reduce energy bills through the establishment of a community energy project. The Sandwick Social and Economic Development Company (SSEDCo) has secured £20,000 in grant funding from Local Energy Scotland, part of the Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES). This funding will support a project designed to explore energy-saving options for local residents.

The need for this initiative was highlighted during a community consultation event, which informed local place plans. Following the event, SSEDCo submitted a grant application to investigate potential solutions. The organization conducted a competitive tender process for pre-feasibility work, ultimately selecting Voar Energy Ltd as the consulting firm to lead the study.

Community Engagement and Sustainable Solutions

The pre-feasibility study will examine various options, inviting input from all residents in Sandwick. Daniel Gear from Voar Energy stated that the project will focus on community energy clubs, aiming to enhance the sustainability of energy use and lower costs. He explained, “The concept behind community energy clubs sees households and small businesses directly benefit from renewable electricity generated within their own community.”

One example of how this could work includes using a community-owned turbine or solar panels, possibly supplemented with battery storage. The goal is to provide fairly priced energy for local consumption, keeping both the financial and social benefits within the community. Gear elaborated that this model allows community members to purchase locally generated power at prices that reflect its true value, rather than paying higher retail rates to the grid.

While community energy clubs are central to the project, SSEDCo emphasizes that they are not the only focus. The initiative aims to be community-driven, allowing locals to develop their own ideas for energy production. Gear noted, “An essential element of this approach is that the concepts are led by the community right from the very start.”

Plans for Future Engagement

SSEDCo expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with Voar Energy and anticipates broader community engagement as the project unfolds. A public meeting is scheduled for February, where residents can learn more and contribute their ideas.

Local Energy Scotland serves as the operational arm of the Scottish Government’s Community and Renewable Energy Scheme, highlighting the initiative’s alignment with broader sustainability goals. As Sandwick explores innovative ways to manage energy use, this community energy project could serve as a model for other regions seeking to reduce energy costs and enhance local resilience.
