Save £630 Annually by Tackling ‘Phantom Load’ in Your Home
New research indicates that leaving household appliances on standby can significantly inflate annual energy bills. Experts suggest that the average household in the UK could be incurring costs of up to £630 each year due to these energy-draining devices. The findings have brought attention to the most common culprits that contribute to this unnecessary expenditure.
A survey conducted by Quotezone.co.uk reveals that 58% of respondents admitted to leaving electrical items switched on overnight. Alarmingly, 34% were unaware that this habit could lead to losses exceeding £100 annually. The study highlights that as much as 30% of an average home’s electricity bill can stem from appliances that are plugged in but not actively in use.
Identifying the Standby Offenders
The research identifies several appliances with particularly high standby consumption. Faulty set-top box recorders, for instance, are notorious for their power use, as they remain connected for scheduled recordings and software updates, consuming energy even when not actively in use. Similarly, outdoor lights that are left on overnight can add significantly to energy costs. For example, two 60w outdoor lights running for ten hours each night can increase annual bills by over £135.
Another common issue arises from extra fridges, often used for parties or seasonal storage. These additional appliances, especially older models, can quietly add more than £100 to energy bills each year.
Computers that remain on standby can also contribute to energy waste. Many households operate desktop computers which, even in idle mode, draw power to sustain background functions. Completely shutting down these devices at the end of the day can save approximately £86 annually.
Uncovering Hidden Costs
Certain appliances often overlooked can accumulate costs as well. Electric towel rails, for instance, can consume a surprising amount of energy if left on continuously. Installing a timer or manually switching them off can mitigate this waste. Digital TV boxes, much like set-top recorders, require energy for updates and can lead to losses up to £40 each year if not unplugged when not in use.
Smart speakers and integrated sound systems are also always on standby, ready to respond to commands. This constant state of readiness can lead to mounting energy costs, particularly if multiple devices are distributed throughout the home.
Even household necessities like routers, which are designed to remain on, can be switched off during longer absences, such as holidays, to conserve energy.
Small appliances, like coffee machines, often remain in a low-power state after use, leading to unnoticed energy consumption. Unplugging these devices after brewing the last cup can help reduce costs, as can turning off the microwave when it is not in use.
According to energy calculations sourced from Loop and Ofgem, the research was based on a randomised survey of 1,000 respondents across the UK conducted in October 2025. The results indicate a margin of error of approximately 5% at a 95% confidence level.
Helen Rolph, an energy savings expert at Quotezone.co.uk, expressed concern about the high percentage of individuals leaving appliances on standby. “It’s worrying that nearly six in ten people still leave their appliances on standby, especially when this could be costing households hundreds of pounds per year,” she stated. Rolph emphasized that turning off appliances when not in use is a straightforward yet effective method to reduce energy costs, particularly in light of rising energy prices.
As energy bills see an increase this month with the price cap rising by £35, addressing standby power consumption could not only help recoup that added cost but potentially lead to significant savings throughout the year.
