Tom Brady Reveals Cloned Dog: The Emotional Journey and Cost
NFL legend Tom Brady has captivated the public with the announcement that his family’s new dog, Junie, is a clone of his late pit bull mix, Lua, who passed away in December 2023. This revelation has ignited a mix of fascination and controversy, prompting questions about the implications of such a scientific endeavor and its associated costs.
Brady, who is an investor in Colossal Biosciences, a Texas-based biotechnology firm, confirmed that the cloning process was driven by his family’s emotional attachment to Lua. He shared details about the collaboration, which utilized technology developed by Viagen Pets & Equine, a company recently acquired by Colossal that specializes in cloning domestic animals. The cloning process began before Lua’s death, when scientists collected and preserved a blood sample to extract viable DNA.
In his own words, Brady stated, “I love my animals. They mean the world to me and my family. A few years ago, I worked with Colossal and leveraged their non-invasive cloning technology through a simple blood draw of our family’s elderly dog before she passed.”
The Cloning Process: A Scientific Breakthrough
Brady expressed excitement about the possibilities of cloning, stating that the company “gave my family a second chance with a clone of our beloved dog.” He also looks forward to Colossal’s efforts in helping other families and contributing to the conservation of endangered species.
While Junie shares the same genetic makeup as Lua, experts indicate that cloning does not replicate personality or memories, which are shaped by an animal’s environment and upbringing. According to The Guardian, cloning a dog through Viagen typically costs between $50,000 and $85,000, which translates to approximately £38,000 to £65,000. This steep price tag reflects the complexity of the scientific process, which requires specialized equipment, skilled embryologists, and surrogate care, placing dog cloning within the luxury biotech market largely accessible to wealthy individuals and celebrities.
Viagen has previously offered cloning services to notable figures, including singer Barbra Streisand. Critics of the practice argue that it commercializes grief, while supporters view it as a significant advancement in biotechnology that allows families to maintain a genetic connection with beloved pets.
Understanding the Cloning Technique
The standard technique employed in commercial pet cloning is known as somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT). This involves taking a somatic cell from the donor animal, transferring its nucleus into an egg cell from which the nucleus has been removed, stimulating the egg to develop into an embryo, and finally implanting it into a surrogate mother. Although the cloned pet is genetically identical to the donor, environmental factors and developmental variations can result in differences in behavior and appearance.
While specific details of the cloning process for Tom Brady’s dog have not been publicly shared by Colossal Biosciences, media reports suggest that it aligns with the SCNT method. The company has ambitious plans to apply similar genetic technologies not only for pet cloning but also for conservation efforts and the revival of extinct species.
Colossal’s high-profile backers, including Brady, have significantly increased awareness regarding the transition of biotechnology from research laboratories into mainstream commercial applications. As the discussion surrounding cloning continues, it raises important questions about ethics, emotional connections, and the future of technology in our lives.
