University of Miami Enforces New Restrictions on Electric Scooters
The University of Miami is implementing new restrictions on electric scooters, e-bikes, and other personal mobility devices, citing safety concerns and the increasing risk of battery fires. Starting on August 19, 2023, students and staff will be prohibited from riding or parking personal electric vehicles in pedestrian-heavy areas such as sidewalks and breezeways on the Coral Gables campus.
This announcement, made by the university’s Parking and Transportation Department, is part of a larger initiative aimed at promoting “safer, smarter mobility.” According to officials, the decision comes in response to a surge in incidents involving pedestrian collisions, blocked emergency routes, and battery-related fires. The department stated, “This policy is about protecting the safety and well-being of our community.”
The new guidelines also address growing concerns regarding distracted riders. Reports indicate that many students frequently navigate the campus on scooters while wearing earbuds and focusing on their phones, which creates additional risks for themselves and pedestrians.
Campus Safety and National Trends
The University of Miami’s actions reflect a broader trend in colleges across the country as institutions confront the challenges posed by lithium-ion batteries and the rapid rise of personal electric vehicles. The university has previously banned shared scooter services like Bird and Lime, and there are currently no plans to reassess this policy.
As safety becomes a key priority, the university is taking significant steps to ensure that its campus environment remains safe for all. The new micromobility parking map and full policy details can be accessed through the university’s official channels, allowing students and staff to stay informed about these changes.
By implementing these restrictions, the University of Miami aims to foster a safer atmosphere while navigating the complexities of modern transportation options.
