Alex Albon to Start Chinese Grand Prix from Pit Lane After Team Changes
Alex Albon will begin the Chinese Grand Prix from the pit lane after the Williams F1 Team implemented changes to his car’s suspension during parc ferme conditions. This decision marks the second consecutive day that Albon will start from the pit lane, following a similar situation prior to the Sprint event.
Albon qualified in 18th position for the Grand Prix on March 15, 2026. However, the team’s modifications to the suspension of his FW48 contravened Article B3.5.7 of the FIA F1 Regulations, necessitating his pit lane start. The FIA regulations stipulate that any alterations to the car setup during this period are prohibited, making the team’s decision a significant breach.
This incident comes on the heels of the team’s actions on the previous day, when they also opted to change the suspension setup of Albon’s car before the Sprint race. In that event, Albon managed to advance from his qualifying position to finish in 16th place, benefiting from retirements among competitors, including Arvid Lindblad, Valtteri Bottas, and Nico Hulkenberg.
While the FW48 has been criticized for being overweight, Albon’s teammate, Carlos Sainz, highlighted additional issues impacting the team’s performance. He remarked on the significant dependence on downforce and weight at the Shanghai International Circuit, stating, “We know we lag in these two areas.” Sainz elaborated on the challenges faced by the team, emphasizing the need for a smooth weekend to improve their standing.
The Spaniard expressed frustration at the ongoing struggles, which stem from reliability issues encountered in previous races. “We’re trying different things, testing different options,” Sainz said. “We want to hold our promises that this year was supposed to be a good one.”
Despite the setbacks, Sainz noted some improvement with the power unit performance compared to earlier sessions. He indicated that although the power unit showed promising results, the team’s primary focus remains on reducing the car’s weight and implementing necessary upgrades.
As the Williams F1 Team navigates these challenges, the implications for their season are significant. Starting from the pit lane will undoubtedly complicate Albon’s efforts to gain valuable points in the championship standings. The team is under pressure to turn their season around, particularly as they aim to build on expectations set prior to the start of the season.
Fans and observers are keenly watching the developments as the Chinese Grand Prix unfolds. The Williams team hopes to leverage the remaining opportunities in the race weekend to gather insights and improve their performance moving forward.
