Alexandre Pantoja Avoids Surgery, Eyes Quick UFC Comeback
Former UFC flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja will not undergo surgery following a serious arm injury sustained during UFC 323. The injury occurred during his title fight against Joshua Van on December 9, 2023, where Pantoja attempted a head kick, resulting in a dislocated elbow after he fell awkwardly to the canvas.
In the opening moments of the fight, Pantoja executed a head kick that Van successfully countered, causing the champion to lose balance. As he fell to the mat, Pantoja’s left arm gave way, leading to a devastating injury that many believed would sideline him for an extended period. The immediate aftermath of his defeat left Pantoja visibly distraught, with fans speculating on a lengthy recovery.
However, recent updates from Ariel Helwani, a well-respected MMA journalist, have provided a glimmer of hope for Pantoja’s supporters. During his coverage of the 2025 MMA Awards, Helwani reported that Pantoja’s team confirmed he will not need surgery. “Just the tendons were affected – no fractures, ligaments are intact, no surgery,” Helwani stated. He went on to suggest that Pantoja could make a return to the octagon as early as mid to late 2026.
Fans have reacted positively to the news, expressing their surprise and relief on social media platforms. One fan remarked, “That’s great for him and honestly surprising. I thought he’d for sure need surgery.” Another enthusiastically commented, “Lucky guy,” reflecting the sentiment of many following his recovery.
Pantoja, who won the flyweight title by defeating Brandon Moreno in July 2023, successfully defended his championship four times before losing to Van. His defeat marked a significant moment in UFC history, as Van became the second-youngest champion and the first fighter born in the 2000s to win a title. Following the fight, Van expressed willingness to grant Pantoja a rematch, though the current focus for the new champion is likely to be a title defense against a top-ranked contender, potentially Manel Kape or Tatsuro Taira.
As Pantoja resumes training without any support for his injured arm, the MMA community eagerly anticipates his return. With a history of resilience and determination, Pantoja’s journey back to the octagon is one that both fans and fighters will closely follow in the months to come.
