Celtic Triumphs Over FC Utrecht to Secure Europa League Play-Off Spot
Celtic FC advanced to the knockout stages of the Europa League after a commanding 4-2 victory against FC Utrecht on October 26, 2023. The match, held at Celtic Park in Glasgow, showcased a strong performance from the home side, allowing them to navigate past the Dutch club and secure their place in the next round.
Benjamin Nygren opened the scoring for Celtic early in the match, followed by an own goal from FC Utrecht’s Nick Viergever. Arne Engels converted a penalty to extend Celtic’s lead, and an impressive header from Auston Trusty put the team ahead 4-1. Although FC Utrecht threatened a comeback with goals from Dani de Wit and Adrian Blake, Celtic held on to seal the win.
Celtic interim manager Martin O’Neill expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, noting the improvement since a challenging start to the competition. He acknowledged that the team had only managed to secure one victory in their first four Europa League matches, making this win particularly significant.
O’Neill stated, “Obviously I’m delighted with the result for a start. And the performance I thought for most parts was really terrific.” He highlighted the team’s pressing game, which allowed them to score early and maintain control. However, he admitted the two late goals from Utrecht created some anxiety. “They get a goal back and it unnerves you a little bit… But Trusty comes up with a great header and naturally we deserved to win the game.”
The victory sets Celtic on a path to the play-off round, where they will learn on October 27, 2023, whether they will face Ferencvaros or Stuttgart. The potential for a matchup against either Braga or Porto in the round of 16 adds to the anticipation for the Scottish champions.
O’Neill praised his players for their resilience and dedication, stating, “You would have got long odds on us qualifying after about four games… But great credit to the players, genuinely great credit to them. They worked tirelessly on what they have done.”
Looking ahead, Celtic is reportedly interested in strengthening their squad with new talent. Two wingers, Fares Ghedjemis from Italian Serie B club Frosinone and Damir Redzic from Slovakian outfit DAC Dunajska Streda, are on the club’s radar. O’Neill indicated that discussions are ongoing regarding potential signings, saying, “I don’t want to be that cryptic. I would hate to say something is absolutely certain and then it fell away.”
As Celtic prepares for the upcoming draw, the team has demonstrated a renewed sense of confidence, reflecting O’Neill’s leadership and the players’ commitment to achieving their goals in the Europa League this season.
