Christian Horner Emerges as Candidate for Aston Martin Leadership
Christian Horner is being considered for a leadership role within Aston Martin’s Formula 1 team, as the organization looks to transition from current team principal Andy Cowell. The BBC first reported this potential shift, indicating that Cowell may be reassigned to oversee Aston Martin’s power unit project. This change comes as the team prepares for a new engine partnership with Honda, set to begin in 2026.
Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll has ambitious plans to elevate the team to championship status under the upcoming regulations. The recent signing of renowned designer Adrian Newey and the construction of a cutting-edge F1 facility at Silverstone reflect Stroll’s commitment to this goal. Sources have informed ESPN that Horner is among the candidates being considered to fill the leadership void, alongside former McLaren CEO Andreas Seidl and current Sauber/Audi CEO Mattia Binotto, who previously led Ferrari from 2019 to 2023.
Horner’s recent settlement with Red Bull, reportedly valued at $100 million (£76 million), allows him to re-enter the F1 landscape as early as 2026. ESPN has identified Aston Martin as a likely destination for Horner, who is expected to take on a role that goes beyond a traditional team principal position. This suggests he may return with significant financial backing, possibly as part of an investment deal.
At Red Bull, Horner served as both CEO and team principal, but he had limited financial investment in the team. A move to Aston Martin would reunite him with Newey, who left Red Bull in 2023 to take on the role of technical director and co-owner at Aston Martin. Together, Horner and Newey played pivotal roles in transforming Red Bull into a dominant force in Formula 1 during the early 2010s and into the current decade.
Despite speculation regarding a potential rift between Newey and Horner, sources close to the situation have indicated that their working relationship would not pose a barrier to collaboration. There is, however, one complicating factor: Stroll’s aspirations to attract top talent to Aston Martin should the team succeed under the new regulations.
Horner’s past relationship with Jos Verstappen, father of current Red Bull star Max Verstappen, was notably tense prior to his departure from Red Bull. Nevertheless, it is believed that Horner and the four-time world champion maintain a positive relationship, which could play a role in his decision-making moving forward.
As Aston Martin navigates this critical transition, the potential appointment of Horner would mark a significant step in the team’s pursuit of success in Formula 1’s evolving landscape.
